Quick Start — 5 Essential Steps
Getting set up safely takes only a few minutes when you follow Ledger’s recommended workflow. The objective is simple: keep your private keys offline inside your Ledger device while using Ledger Live Desktop as the secure, user-friendly interface for portfolio management, transactions, staking, and firmware updates.
- Download Ledger Live: Always download Ledger Live Desktop directly from ledger.com. Do not install apps from unverified sources.
- Connect your device: Use the supplied USB cable and follow on-screen prompts in Ledger Live to initialize your Ledger device and install firmware if required.
- Create a PIN: Choose a PIN you can remember but that is not easily guessable. Your PIN protects access to the physical device.
- Write down your recovery phrase: Ledger will display a recovery phrase (24 words). Write it down on the recovery sheet and store it offline in a safe location. Never share it, photograph it, or enter it on a website.
- Add accounts & verify transactions: Add crypto accounts in Ledger Live and approve every outgoing transaction on the physical device screen for maximum security.

Why Ledger Live + Hardware?
Ledger Live acts as the trusted interface while the hardware device stores your keys in a certified secure element. This split ensures your private keys never leave the device, protecting you from remote compromise. Ledger supports hundreds of assets and provides features like staking, swaps, and portfolio analytics while keeping you in full control.
If you need additional help, Ledger’s official support resources and step-by-step video tutorials are available from the Support section. Safe setup and careful custody practices help preserve your access to crypto for years to come.
